Society’s acceptance of rape culture is overwhelming. Every one of us is involved in it, and we have all been socialized into a society that normalizes and makes light of sexual assault, victim blaming and shaming, and sexual objectification of young women. Objectification like what we saw in a tweet from Kilroy’s earlier this week. That wasn’t boys being boys. That was sexism, and it’s wrong and disrespectful. Comments like that tweet are only a symptom of the bigger problem: how young men have been programmed to think about, talk about, and treat women.
Now, why do we care about this at Switchyard Brewing?
Because not enough men are being told to respect women. Respect their bodies, respect their choices, respect them as equals. Because not enough women feel they have the power to take care of themselves and each other. To own their bodies and their choices. Because 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted during their college career. Because our industry is cluttered with beer names and labels that are demeaning and objectify women. Because it’s our responsibility as a society to remind people that women aren’t sexual objects and that we all deserve respect regardless of our gender, religion, sexual orientation or race.
Switchyard Brewing is part of your community. That’s why we think it’s on us, too. We believe that business can, and should be a catalyst for positive change within the community. It’s time to shut down this disrespectful narrative before the cycle consumes more people. Before more men say or do something they should regret. Before more women are left feeling like that is just how men are.
We know the problem because we have seen it night after night. We are not only the founders of Switchyard. We are also EMTs with 20 years of combined pre-hospital medicine experience. Working the night shift every Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the two busiest ambulances in Bloomington, responding both downtown and on campus. We have been there. We have seen the aftermath of this problem firsthand.
By reading this, sharing it and living the message, you have already come one step closer to making a difference. It’s time to create a new normal. #WeAreTheChange
